Ingredients

1 cup dates, finely chopped

1 cup boiling water

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 cup butter

1/2 cup shortening or margarine

1 cup sugar

2 eggs, lightly beaten

1 3/4 cup flour

2 tablespoons cocoa

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla

6 ounces chocolate chips

1 cup chopped walnuts

Preparation

In a medium bowl, stir together dates, boiling water and baking soda, set aside and allow to cool completely.

Cream together butter, margarine and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and mix well.

Sift dry ingredients together.

Gradually add the flour mixture alternately with the date mixture until well-blended. Add vanilla and mix in.

Spread batter in a 13X9 inch pan. Sprinkle chocolate chips and walnut bits evenly over the top.

Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
