Ingredients

2 lbs lean ground beef

2 tablespoons oil

1 large chopped onion

1 large clove garlic, minced

1 green pepper, chopped

1 lb can stewed tomatoes

1 15oz can V8 or tomato sauce

1 small can tomato paste

2 1/4 cups water

1 teaspoon chili powder

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

pinch of basil

1 bay leaf

2 tablespoons brown sugar

Ground cayenne pepper to taste

1 10oz can chili beans (do not drain)

Preparation

Sautee onion, green pepper, garlic in oil. Add beef and continue cooking until brown. Add all other ingredients except beans, bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer gently, uncovered, until sauce thickens - about 1.5 hours. Add beans and serve.
